The Horses - Horses on Livery - News

Our Holidays

We offer four types of riding holiday for a maximum of 6 riders.

Aventura. (25 hours riding, one week)
Each day covers new ground. Explore the Almádena river valley, where once there were paddy fields, gallop up the hills deep into the National Forest where we might catch a glimpse of Genet or Mongoose. Lunch under pine trees, with stunning views of the countryside. Be at one with your horse and nature.

Cortiça. (16 hours riding, one week)
Acquaint yourself with our horses at the yard. Each day progresses to more demanding riding. Enjoy cantering past Cortiça (Cork Oak) trees and riding through sleepy villages nestled between the hills. Going South along the coast we pass Roman ruins and 17th Century fortifications to lunch at Boca do Rio.

Amendoeiras. (13 hours riding, one week)
Take it easy and relax in the local surroundings whilst taking the chance to improve your riding. Lessons are given by qualified instructors either on the flat or over jumps, depending on ability. Each day you will also enjoy guided hacks into the local countryside, riding past Amendoeiras (Almond trees) and fig orchards.

Papabelhas. (9 hours riding, 4 days)
Enjoy a short break taking in the Algarve countryside.

Experience the quiet atmosphere of the Western Algarve from a different angle.

Luncheons are provided on all riding days.

Accommodation

Belo Horizonte is a friendly Portuguese run Guest House, that is only 200m from the stables and 800m from the village of Almádena. By the pool, or overlooking the garden, are comfortable rooms with T.V, and fridge, that sleep two in twin or double beds with en-suite bathrooms.
You have free access to the games & fitness gym, tennis court, swimming pool and terrace. There is also a communal lounge with satellite T.V. and bar. A small charge is payable for the use of the Sauna, great for relaxing the muscles after a long day’s ride.
Breakfast is served, before your ride, in the Dining Room overlooking the village and countryside.

Transport

We collect you from, and return you to, Faro Airport, which is just over an hour's drive from the Riding Centre.
We recommend that you hire a car. However, both the Accommodation and the Stables are situated on the local Bus-route or Taxis can be called.

The Horses

We have versatile and happy horses that we have chosen for their generosity and character. A few we have bred and trained ourselves. Although the predominant blood lines are Lusitano, the range of build and size is due to cross-breeding with Arab, Thoroughbred and the heavier breeds.
Our horses are used to the terrain and climate and will reliably carry you all day. They are ridden in the Continental style, with English tack.
The Aventura holidays currently have a weight limit of 14st.

Meals

Start the day with a Continental breakfast at Belo Horizonte.
Lunches are included in the rides, either a sumptuous picnic or stopping at one of our favourite Portuguese restaurants. Amendoa and Cortiça riders having lessons or short rides usually lunch at the farm-house.
Traditional evening meals are provided on the riding days at a local Portuguese restaurant in Almádena, a short walk from Belo Horizonte.

Climate

In Summer it can get very hot, rising to around 100ºF (44ºC) in the shade. The day rides always have a break for lunch starting around mid-day, and setting out again when the temperature has dropped.
In Winter it often rains, so the countryside is green, but you do get lovely warm sunny days.

Clothing

For your comfort and safety we suggest that you bring your own riding wear. We insist that you wear a hard hat and suitable riding footwear. Remember to bring clothes suitable for the season and a bum-bag is handy to carry water, a camera and any small necessities that you may need when riding.

Spare Time

We can arrange that non-riding friends and relatives join the riders for lunch and dinner. Take advantage of the accommodation as this area offers a wide range of activities. Golf courses, Sports centres, Tennis, Archery, Windsurfing, Sailing and Deep-Sea Diving schools are within easy range. There are also many Historic places to explore, beaches near-by and plenty of semi-wild countryside to ramble through.
Local bars have Pool tables and Dart-boards, and there are Discos in Luz and Lagos for those who have enough energy left for evening entertainment
